While most of us worked in proximity, in highly relational cultures, the pandemic truly only accelerated the expectations of flexibility that were already in motion. As our means and tools for accomplishing tasks and meeting goals were changing, so too was the definition of “the workplace”. However, one thing’s for sure, in 2020 we were all forced to accelerate and adapt quickly. We were forced to forge new ways, developing new systems and strategies, but we have also been forced to manage some very real tensions: expectations, accountability, communication, protecting culture and healthy team dynamics.
In this week's episode, Jenni continues the conversation about creating clarity and consistency within hybrid cultures in an interview with Kelly Skiles, XP at Soul City Church in Chicago. Kelly spends the majority of her time developing leaders, building team culture and focusing on strategy. She has worked both in ministry and in the non profit space for nearly 20 years where she has enjoyed coaching and leading dozens of teams through strategic processes to help them reach clarity and achieve their goals. She has been married to her husband Mark for 18 years and has 3 kids and loves spending her free time cheering on the Chicago Bulls.
In the past, proximity helped to create accountability, but now that we’ve moved to cultures of flexibility, necessary feedback has naturally become less frequent. With less interaction we are then required to be more mindful and intentional about the various communication styles of those on our teams. As a leader, there is no one-size fits all approach. However, as leaders we must ask ourselves the important question - How do I need to adjust or shift in order to help create a culture that people want to be a part of and that they can contribute and do their best work?
